Avatar Nestor-Zimonjic Win Eighth Title Of 2009, Overcome Arch Rivals

Top seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic beat their rivals, second seeds and three-time former champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, for the fifth time in six meetings this year, to clinch the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel doubles title on Sunday.

Nestor and Zimonjic, appearing in their 10th final of the season, defeated the Bryan twins 6-2, 6-3 in just 54 minutes. They improved to 8-3 lifetime against their rivals for the title of ATP World Tour Champions.

Nestor and Zimonjic picked up 500 ATP World Tour Rankings points and split €71,500 in prize money for winning their eighth ATP World Tour title of the year, while their American opponents earned 300 points and shared €37,000.

“We were pretty much on fire from the beginning, especially Nenad he played great,” said Nestor. “I kind of followed him, played well myself. It is always great playing against the Bryans; they always bring out the best in us.”

The 37-year-old Nestor captured his third title from four final appearances in Basel and his 63rd tour-level trophy – the most among active players. He reached the final in 2002 with former long-time partner Mark Knowles and the duo returned to capture the title in 2003 (d. Arnold Ker-Hood) and 2006 (d. Fyrstenberg-Matkowski). For Zimonjic, it was his 31st career title and first piece of silverware at the ATP World Tour 500 indoor hard-court tournament.

Nestor and Zimonjic broke serve immediately and could have taken a 3-0 lead, but failed to convert a break point opportunity at 30/40 on Mike Bryan’s serve. The Canadian-Serbian duo extended their lead to 5-2, when they broke Mike’s serve again, and coolly closed out the first set in 27 minutes, having won 76 per cent of service points and hit three aces.

Both pairs exchanged breaks of serve in the third and fourth games of the second set, but it was Nestor and Zimonjic who broke Mike Bryan’s serve to love to take a decisive 4-3 lead. They won the last four games of the match, improving to a 51-14 match record on the season, when Bob Bryan hit a double fault on their second match point.

“To be honest, I do not know what happened today,” admitted Zimonjic. “I felt we could not miss. We played very good tennis, especially on the big points. The whole week was a great tournament. It was difficult coming in on three losses, so the first match was definitely difficult and as the tournament went on we were improving.

“It is definitely a big challenge to play against the Bryans, especially in the finals. It is great to win an eighth title this year, definitely a career-high. Last year it was five tournaments. There is still two more to go and the competition between both teams will be very interesting with the year-end No. 1 ranking at stake.”

Since opening the year with back-to-back final losses at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha and Medibank International in Sydney, Nestor and Zimonjic have won eight straight finals. Their last came at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters (d. Bryan-Bryan) in Cincinnati in August.

The Bryans, who were playing in their 11th tour-level final of the season (6-5), picked up their last ATP World Tour title at the PTT Thailand Open in Beijing (d. Knowles-Roddick) four weeks ago.

The Californians, who also have secured their place at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, dropped to a 64-16 mark on the season and 55-38 lifetime in finals.

“It is a similar situation to last year, when both teams were trying to finish No. 1,” said Nestor. “It will probably come down to London and hopefully we’ll get a chance to play them in the final and settle No. 1.

“We bring a lot of confidence into Paris [next week] and are hoping to improve on previous appearances,” said Nestor. “It is a tough draw, but we haven’t been playing better so that is a good sign.”
